What is acceptable steering system play?

I am doing a little bit of diagnostic work on my steering system. I put a dial indicator on the rim of the front wheel, then measured the amount of steering wheel play before the DTI needle moved. Its about 4-8mm 0.15-0.3″ measured at outside of the steering wheel. The FSM does not have any specification, so what is an acceptable amount of play?

It is a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
