My name is David Rogers I’m retired living in Baru, Costa Rica: and, I prefer to take care of my car myself, rather than take to a local shop.
      I have a 2010 Toyota Land Cruiser (6 cylinder diesel turbo – 4×4).
What kind of Valvoline (or quality) automatic transmission fluid do I need?
I recently purchased the car and it is high mileage, the odometer shows 120,000klm; however, in Costa Rica odometer cannot be trusted. I don’t know what kind of fluid is in it now. Knowing a little about the previous owner, I don’t think the fluid has ever been changed.
Do I need to drop the pan and clean or change a filter?
I can find most US products in San Jose, Costa Rica. If need be, I can have someone being it down from U.S.

Don’t know about the diesel engine version of this truck since it is not an option here in US but looking at service information for the 5.7L version it says Toyota WS fluid. so any fluid that meets that standard should work. The 5.7 has an AB60F trans might have to see what kind of trans you have.

I would also note that in the USA Toyota does not recommend changing the fluid on an auto trans. It is good for the life of the transmission. There is even a reminder note on the dipstick. Not sure what they recommend outside the USA.

I think that whole “fluid is good the the life of the trans” stuff is a bunch of hooey. My Toyota took Toyota Type 4 ATF and it got changed with a filter and pan drop. Course you had to drop the pan to get to the filter. Anyhow, car ran great. Your trans isn’t in a car so double check before you order anything.

Check your manual, if should mention something like Toyota Type T, T-II or T-IV

It seems like Domestic & Import Multi-Vehicle: Valvoline MaxLife ATF (Full Synthetic) would work though as it seems to have all their specs covered:

You could also check with your dealer or get the fluid from them. I believe Toyota atf is by Mobil from what i recall during my last ATF research binge.
