I have a 2003 Toyota corolla with a c50 manual transmission, and I can’t figure out which fluid to buy. I know it has to be 75w-90 and meets gl-4 or gl-5 api requirements. Researching a bit, I found that apparently some gl-5 fluids caused synchro wear. Do you know of a certain transmission fluid which is certainly suitable for the Toyota c50 transmission?

Your requirement is according to the owners manual:
    MANUAL TRANSAXLE
Oil capacity, L (qt., Imp. qt.):
    1.9 (2.0, 1.7)
    Oil type:
Gear oil API GL−4 or GL−5
GL-5 is fine if it states that it’s yellow metal safe. A lot of GL-5 is not yellow metal safe and will ruin the synchros over time. GL-4 is most commonly used and is safe

So would Valvoline Maxlife gl-4 75w-90 be a good pick?

    No reason it shouldn’t.
