ok…….
So we know the valve guides and seats are good. We know the exhaust gasket is good. The Hydraulic adjusters are getting oil.
When you got the new head it cam with a cam right?
Yes, the rebuilt head included a camshaft.
The head should have come “broken in.”
You said you checked the exhaust manifold. Did you re-use the original exhaust gasket? If so, this may be your problem. Exhaust gaskets only make a good seal once (because of their construction). I would replace the gasket with a new one and see what you get.
I’m assuming the valves aren,t the issue since they have been in and out so much, but the symptom has not changed.
Let me know what you find out. Good luck.
No, I put new gaskets on the engine for any part I removed/replaced, no reused gaskets.

Thanks again!

First i will test my head light switch (and cross my fingers that’s the problem.) You mentioned a inline fuse, in the switch, would it be replaceable? or would I be looking at a whole new switch?

Is it possible to Wire the mentioned interior lights to be on 100% of the time when the car is on? (It sounds like its not a good idea, but I thought I would ask.)

Thanks! that some really detailed info. (slightly over my head too! lol)

When you say to put the headlamp switch into “Head” what are you referring too? Just turning the headlight switch to the on position?

Also you are correct on the Hvac light, it flickers/does not work. and the defrost button.

I forgot to ask about a switch to just bypass my issue. If i were to go the route of the switch, where would i splice that into?

Thanks! 🙂

Hi,

I just wanted to follow up, and also thank you!

I ended up buying a multimeter and testing the EGR with the paperclip method, Turns out after it was all said and done, the EGR was stuck open.

I have replaced the EGR and a new gasket, had the codes cleared, took it for a ride, and it idles as smooth as butter now. (Of all the things in my life i have over-thunk, this is the worst one)

Now my first major issue with the car is fixed! on to the others!

Thanks again college man, that is awesome, now i will not need to buy expensive probes!

I think i have decided on two multimeters and need help deciding which one would be best for automotive use.

I am looking at;

and

http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=12988573

(the radioshack one is 29.99 in my local store, its “Last years model” but from what i can see the one on the link has essentially the same features.)

If you have other suggestions let me know too!

Thanks again for your help!

Hello college man,

Thanks for the reply!

Ill be honest, I have seen the troubleshooting the p0401 and p0404 page.

I have not tried these methods since i do not have a multimeter..

I wouldn’t mind buying a multimeter, its the piercing probes that seems overly expensive(for decent ones).. is there anyway to work around these probes without cutting or stripping the wires?

Thanks again!
