I ended up replacing the alternator. It seems to have fixed the problem. Thank you for your input. I agree with what you said about going ahead and replacing the trouble part.

Yes, they said the battery was great. I think it tested right at the correct CCA.

Does it always happen so violently? This spilled out a lot of coolant. And thanks everybody for the help. My mom loves having heat again.

I’m not sure if it has a control valve or not. But, I got the heat working. I bled the air out of the coolant tank. It took about 10 minutes of running then it got kinda crazy. I guess the thermostat opened and coolant came rushing up and out of the tank along with a bunch of air. I quickly shut off the car and could hear a bunch of air gurgling. I waited a few minutes and started it back up and didn’t see anything else happen. The heat is working much better now. Does anybody know what caused the coolant to pour out of the tank like that?

My guess would be the sensor then. It doesn’t sound like you’re having any symptoms of the vehicle running cold.

Is the car getting up to operating temperature? Is the heater blowing hot air? If the thermostat is stuck open then a lot of times the car will run cooler and not get up to operating temp/ not blow hot air.

Okay, I took the back brakes apart and the pads, especially the passenger side, were completely frozen in place. They had rusted in place and was causing the brakes to grab. This took care of the brakes grabbing but the noise is still there. It only happens after stopping and trying to go again. You can feel and hear it. The noise isn’t loud more like a grinding. None of the brakes are rubbing anymore. It only lasts for a second or so. Does this have anything to do with the abs and the esp bas lights being on?
And just to let you know there was no problem with the parking brakes and the caliper pins were in great shape.

What would have caused the assembly to push away from the vehicle so violently when taken apart? This confused me so bad. Nothing should make it do that

We will be taking everything apart today and I’ll check all of the parts. And it’s the rotor/drum p brake combo.

Why are you saying to never compress the springs? I’m not sure why I shouldn’t compress them. I’m not saying you’re wrong, I’m just curious. I was thinking about replacing all 4 shocks anyway. The ride is not very comfortable anymore. I may do this and have everything aligned and balanced.

What do you mean when you say stuck? Do you mean the piston in the caliper or do you mean the slide pins in the caliper?
