Hello everybody, this evening as I was heading home I noticed something with my 1995 Toyota Tercel. I noticed that when I stepped on the gas a little harder than normal my Tercel left a good amount of smoke (appearing to be dark in color). My car does burn oil, but not enough that I ever noticed in the form of smoke. When I got home and listened to the engine it didn’t sound quite right, only very subtly though. It also was vibrating a little bit more than usual, also hardly noticeable. Before I started it up (right before I noticed) I did top up the oil (I did not over fill it) and filled it up with gas. Also, this winter (when it was very cold) the engine light came on and I noticed similar symptoms, and the engine light code come back as an EGR code, which I was told could mean several different things/sensors. Any help as to where I should start, or what I should look at to see what the problem is?
One final note, I’m just a 17 year old kid, I know enough about cars and their various systems, and whatnot, but a detailed answer or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

        Did you clean the EGR?

No, the guy I took it to said it could be any number of things, and that to find out he recomended I wait for the light to go on again (he reset it) I did think of cleaning the EGR valve, but I though I would come here and ask first.

I believe another issue with those engines is buildup in the intake that clogs the EGR vacuum ports. You might consider opening it up and having a look as that may be the cause of both of your problems.

You might also check for this just for good measure.
