Alright, there was no tongue! So I have some more updates for anyone that’s interested. Even after passing emissions, I couldn’t help myself butto try fixing this high/searching idle problem. Even with the stickies….that I have read…and numerous videos….I bought an idle air control valve and throttle position sensor. When I took the IAC valve out, it was covered in funk so I got some throttle body cleaner and a new gasket and I went to town cleaning. Well, that was some more money wasted cause it didn’t fix anything.

Think next ill check hard for that vacuum leak test. I used all my carb cleaner so I may try this cigar smoke trick I just saw Scotty Kilmer doing.

Oh yeah, I did have an update about the poor heat. There is an actuator under the driver side dash that controls air mix blend. Well the thing was just stuck so I closed it a bit. Must be lot of pressure behind it cause it won’t stay all the way closed, but it did help a lot.

Yeah, it’s ol bag o crap is a working project. Thinking of changing my username to busted knuckles.

Hopefully my last update on the ol bag

Okay, so, after I fixed the pinched wire and the blown fuse, the check engine light was still on. So I went and borrowed the scanner again, had same code p0443, and I decided to clear the code….miraculously this time, the code stayed off. Where before it came right back on. So I’ve put about 50 miles on it with the code cleared and off. Today, I took it in to have the emissions done for registration. It PASSED!!! I could have kissed that hairy burly inspector, but I had to play it cool instead.

So, with any luck this should be my last post about the wrong computer, and possibly engine in my 98 dodge dakota.

Thanks Jotmon, I was just getting ready to write an update. I installed the new computer and it runs!! Oh, with OVERDRIVE!!! Who would have thought you have to have the right computer to use overdrive?? Well, I was hoping it would and it did and I’m very pleased.
Now then, of course there are still codes 🙁 but not as many!!
I got a p0443 which is some solenoid purge circuit? Whatever, I did a big Eric NoNo and replaced the solenoid purge valve…only like $30. Well, that was apparently $30 wasted cause the code didn’t go nowhere…even after I cleared it came right back. So research shows I need everything from a new pcm, wiring harness, gas tank, engine etc.

I found a promising fix about an overhead console fuse blown, so I checked that and it was sure enough blown…replaced it, but code still there. Then something about a cut wire for the seatbelt…which mine was definitely pinched, but that didn’t do it.

Oh yeah, and while I was testing the solenoid connections for voltage, out of the blue, the engine goes wide open?? Like i had to cut the key off to stop it. Then starts acting very strange. Started back up and was fine; tiny tap on throttle and goes wide open??.

So I disconnect the map, idle control, throttle position sensor and the solenoid and spray electronic parts cleaner really good. Things seem alright…idle does seem to bounce around a little.

It’s a can o worms to say the least. I’m gonna get a better look at them wires for the TPS tomorrow. Wouldn’t be surprised to find issues as they are kind of jammed in between the firewall and back of motor.

Well, that’s my update, and I’m staying dirty. Apple should make a car that” just works”

Thanks Jotmon, I agree with you, but I’m not totally sure how to check and if if it will make a major difference. I mean, as far as I can tell the wiring harness is original….yeah, the whole thing is a can of worms! I’ve looked for like sensors hanging off the engine not hooked up and what not. I’ve found a wire in the front, I think went to an airbag deployment sensor….the airbags have been deployed yet I don’t feel confident in reinstalling new ones.

My next big issue I think will be the transmission. There are solenoid master rebuild kits affordable, and can be done with the tranny still in the truck.
I doubt to find anywhere an engine compatibility list. I expect the differences to be enough that it would be a Don’t Try this at home kind of deal. Well, it’s already been done, and the truck does run, just with OBD codes out the wazoo and no overdrive. It would be easier to deal with if the truck was bigger and I could get truck tags, then no emissions test would be required.

Well, the code was p0456 again. So I’ve been doing homework and i think it may be the lines to the nvld or canister or something. There’s also some line under the air filter box.

I was looking under the car and I see all the lines I’ve read about, only everything looks practically brand new down there. The YouTube chatter is the plastic joints where the pipes bend is where the air leaks are to be found….or right on the fuel pump…..which is weird cause I’ve seen 2 in research. Really have no interest in dropping the tank to get at them.

This is a pic of some of my problem. The cruise control spring loaded cable end is broke. And I didn’t get the pic but a little hose that goes between two steel hoses was leaking….I thought it was a fuel line, but it wasn’t gas; kind of just some gunk on the hose I could see. Well it seems alright now but I’m not sure if that’s all it was. I can’t seem to find a replacement for that cruise thing, just like the whole throttle body needs to be replaced…..like that’s gonna happen LOL!
