I know, it often times does on these, sometimes it takes a while for the filter to completely fill. Just something to keep in mind. I end up doing about 5.5 qts and adding .5-1.0 qt in between changes. Even if it was a tad low that alone wouldn’t cause that noise anyways, just thought I’d mention that…
There may not be much you can do until it finally “breaks” if it’s going to. It’s interesting that it seems to be oil related though. Btw I noticed you mentioned 4 qts + 1 qt. My manual says 6.0 qts for the 4.0L with the standard filter.

Hah, who am I to tell you about the heat, I’m north of the border in Raleigh but my Grand Cherokee occasionally sees sub-zero temperatures in the mountains. I change the oil every spring & fall (was about to this weekend) to use a different weight for summer/winter. Some thicker weight oil can only help but there still is something going on there.

For what it’s worth I run 10W-40 in these motors but the weather is very warm here, most summer afternoons are 90-105*F.

Weird. I’ve had several of these 4.0’s, never heard anything like that. My initial instinct was top-end too but after reading over everything you’ve done… I’m not so sure anymore. Your next steps would be mine too. I wish I had better insight but good luck and keep us posted!

The Innova 3160 looks like it’s at the higher end of my needs (and price range) but very nice unit indeed. The 3100 could be a good choice, I like the price a lot better, but ABS functionality would be worth it to me. I’ll keep both in mind but I would jump on the 3160 in a heartbeat if I found a sale or something.
I’ve heard of the Snap-on MT2500, it’s very impressive and would be awesome to have. I really wish I could justify the cost. It would definitely be helpful but I think I can “get by” on something simpler. If I did this kind of stuff on a more regular basis I ought to have something of that caliber.
I’m looking at the Actron CP9580 now, I found one used for $90. It’s got all the live data tracking features I’m looking for and the “CodeConnect” feature is a nice touch. I’m in no rush to get one though so I’ll keep weighing my options.
Thanks for all the input guys!

It can go both ways, even in the same brand and same dealer!
I took our Civic Hybrid in to Honda for IMA hybrid problems. Eventually corporate Honda authorized the work under warranty. Ended up taking 2-3 weeks and costing over $2,000 in parts and 9 hours of labor (I’m assuming that’s the shop rate & not the actual time). They gave me a nearly brand new Accord EX-L to drive all the while and only charged me $200-300 out of pocket for everything. I was ecstatic!!!
More on topic to the video, though, I feel bad for the technician who got that car. My service writer told me it was killing him. Turned out there was a wiring problem and he spent the better part of a day or two running down the entire circuitry of the car… all for warranty coverage which I understand everybody gets paid less.
Fast forward a year or two, once Honda found itself in several class-action lawsuits for the performance/durability of the batteries in these cars. I took ours in for evaluation of the poor battery performance (still under warranty) and they installed updates (designed to mask hardware problems with software) without my authorization, without performing any diagnostics, and then had the nerve to *try* to charge me $65 for it. I complained to corporate Honda, who even acknowledged the dealer was dead wrong on all counts and (supposedly) told them not to do that anymore.
That last experience is pretty much why we traded the thing in and got a new Cruze. Our new Chevy dealer’s service dept is so generous and at our beck and call, I will say that’s quite a perk of buying a brand new car. Never again, Honda…

Thanks for the reply, ETCG. No harm or accusations meant, just something I noticed. I’m guilty of doing it myself in the past so I guess I’m on guard for it now lol! I’m sure somebody would cry to high heaven if there was even a microscopic smudge in their pretty little new TSX 😀
By all means then, stay dirty!!!
