First off, is it a 3.1 liter Multiport or a 3100 SFI? Two different motors from different eras. What car is this in?

The timing cover isn’t really a common leak point in the 3100. It is possible, though.

      I can’t speak about the old 3.1.

Your leak is probably at the lower intake manifold gasket. Very very common. ..if you were going that far into the motor I would be doing the intake gaskets as well. anyway.

          FWIW compression is equal.

heat and impact. depending on location maybe heat and lots and lots of leverage (power bar with a length of 2″ pipe over the end)

It’s normal but in my opinion usually poorly executed on Fords – They’ll allow the condensation to drip down on a frame rail or torque box and rot them out after a few years, best thing to do is make up a “drip tray” or anything that will at least direct the water under the car instead of onto the car and running off from there.

the drums should have the discard diameter stamped on them somewhere. some do, not all.

this is what you usually use to measure drums

they CAN work and you can get more miles out of an older motor in certain circumstances. those circumstances are still a mystery and it’s best to err on the side of caution 😀

what makes you think it needs one?

good call. gonna do that tomorrow.

the fuel filter wasn’t REALLY clogged (i’ve seen worse) but the stuff that i blew out of it was pretty black and filthy looking.

Car starts much easier with a clean fuel filter, found a big honkin’ leakin the PCV hose. Case closed.

Turns out you can’t even buy the PCV hose for these cars. Great. Gonna try piecing something together..

As soon as you would crack the bleeder loose on that wheel, some fluid is forced out, so there’s still a bit of pressure hanging around in there. Not the case with the other side…I forgot to check how easy the wheel was to turn with the old hose on it, by the time I remembered I was already loosening the banjo bolt. Once I got the new parts on and bled that corner I checked how much drag there was on both sides and it was equal, compared to the night/day difference in drag on both sides when the old hose was still on there.

Both rear wheels are the same temperature after a long drive around town, lots of stopping and starting. Before I put the new flex hose on the alloy wheel would almost be too hot to touch on the bad side.
