Will disconnect ECM-B tomorrow. I think I have enough info to disable spark; even by removing all power to the coil, not just unplugging coil. Will follow wires..

And Are these what I am going to need for the Blazer ?

Not cool. It’s like when I think of Paul Walker. He did not have to go out that way.

My deepest condolences. You seem to be in good spirits but nobody is ever happy at a loss like that. Hugs, bro.

My Uncle also told me about someone he lost that way. Knowing him, it was either just a story to “scare me straight” or it was real, but.. I watch this literally as I am about to buy “2” jack stands, as I have heard again: NEVER get under a vehicle with only one means of support.

When I work on my Honda, I will have three supports for it:

          1. The vehicle’s own suspension.
          2. A Jack STAND.. I already know that a jack is NOT enough. Though I was also thinking of getting a floor model. We will see.
          3. CONCRETE CINDER BLOCKS OR BRICKS NEXT TO THE JACK STAND.

I hope this post was helpful. Seen too many cars sitting on tire rims turned sideways.. or just a jack, jacked up from the middle of the car. Granted, they don’t get UNDER the car, but…

My Uncle’s shop had a lift.

He no longer has that shop.

He sold it and moved to Florida.

And I would post something religious but it may violate board rules…

Well, without spending all night on it.. trying to get closer to the plugs. Please excuse the cat hair.

And that ultra nasty one is going in my collection of unique automotive failures I have had over the years.
The black sooty color is a sign of a rich mixture.

That really obscenely fouled plug says there’s oil getting into that combustion chamber, and has been for a while. The amount of crud on the plug says that plug hasn’t been sparking for a while and the engine has been running on 5 cylinders. Why wasn’t the plug sparking? Either the rate of oil ingress into that combustion chamber is so high that it overwhelmed the plug’s ability to burn off the buildup as it was accumulating, or, through coincidence, there’s an ignition problem to that cylinder which prevented the plug from sparking.

Maybe it’s the lighting, but the plug on the bottom left appears shiny, like it’s wet. That could be a sign that oil is getting into that cylinder too, but obviously not as much as that fugly mofo.

The rust on the plug shells says these plugs have been in the engine for a long time. I’m going to speculate more than usual on this point. The plug gaps seem curiously narrow for long term plugs. (Electrodes erode and plug gaps increase over time.) Maybe the plugs were seriously under-gapped when they were installed, or somebody has removed them and mis-gapped them since their initial installation, or the ignition system is supplying a weak spark to all cylinders. Maybe the vehicle just hasn’t been driven much at all, but that fouled plug kind of contradicts that possibility.

You obviously need new plugs, and I would replace all the plug wires too. But that won’t do much for you except waste money if you don’t establish why the engine is consuming oil and get that fixed. To begin with, you should do dry and wet compression tests, and a cylinder leakdown test. The usual suspects are worn piston compression rings allied with worn, sticking or broken oil control rings, with a heaping helping of cylinder bore wear. Worn valve guides with worn or missing valve stem oil control seals are other real possibilities, and in a high-mileage engine you can likely have both the piston-related issues and the valve issues together. Any of those scenarios requires varying but substantial amounts of engine disassembly, machining, and, of course, new parts.
Very, VERY good analysis! And much better than I would get on some rather UN-helpful other forums…

Ok. Firstly, the “running on 5 cylinders” thing.. makes a lot of sense. Also, the truck has been driven super-seldom these past.. 2 years. Looking to change that.. We also suspect the Fuel Pressure Regulator OR spider injectors themselves failed, causing the ultra-rich (yes this truck had black smoke before.)

IF I can disable fuel and spark (I will Google the fuses?,) then, sure.. Compression tests can’t hurt. My biggest fear is that I don’t have the means AT THE MOMENT to deal with issues, IF they are there.. IF there are problems. I know oil pressure is good on this and previous nay-sayers on other forums can’t get around that my Coolant Temperature Sensor melted (again) and the gauge that reads ZERO is NOT the Oil Pressure; rather the coolant.. since it has no signal.

Tomorrow will be a splendid day. ๐Ÿ™‚

I have a soon-to-be “Reliable POS” (presently straight up POS) and a Reliable POS. Let me post and then describe, as best I can.

Ok. Firstly, the Reliable POS: 1995 Honda Civic. Born an EX.. Sunroof, Auto. I like the EX trans.. and abused down to an LX 1.5L (!) by the previous owner. Then it got stolen.. then recovered.. from the previous owner (or attempted.) Then I had it. Ran well. Then it blew a head gasket over winter. Then it got stolen.. in the winter. Then recovered. Here is that one:

Then, of course, we have the straight-up POS at this time. 1993 Chevrolet S-10 Blazer Tahoe LT; Engine is presently from a 1994, and is almost halfway apart. This was GM’s luxo-jeep.. Its a GOOD TRUCK it just SUCKS WHEN IT BREAKS! And yes, I have the same feeling to it as Eric’s 1972 car.

Here is the most recent picture I snapped of it before I went in.

However… For the time being, I been driving a 2003 GMC Envoy XL and.. It works perfectly. I just want to KEEP it that way, particularly the trans which still shifts 100% ๐Ÿ™‚ and then I get to get the Honda and Blazer back to.. Reliable POS. ๐Ÿ™‚

… Also: My sister does not believe in the “Reliable POS” theory. She has one of these.. Eric, you know exactly what kind of car this is? And do you like? ๐Ÿ™‚

Eric you ROCK man. I am still doing this head gasket job on my 1995 Honda Civic 1.5L.. First time ever. This video will really help me out.

                  Thank you so much.
I would replace the timing belt for the peace of mind if nothing else, especially if it was my mother’s car. I would probably also replace the timing belt tensioner and water pump at the same time. Even though the engine has low miles, because of acidification of the coolant over time the water pump could be corroded. I also recommend using Honda parts.

Edit: I just looked in the service manual for an ’04 Civic and it says this: “Replace timing belt and inspect auto-tensioner and water pump, every 110 thousand miles or every seven years, whichever comes first.” The ’05 is the same generation, so that would apply to yours as well.

If the drive belt and radiator hoses are also old, they should be changed as well. They should be routinely changed every 2-3 years anyway.

While most would think that low miles would be a good thing, and it generally is, vehicles need to be operated to stay in good shape. It is surprising how fast many things deteriorate on a vehicle from non-use or very light use. You might also want to inspect the side walls of the tires for ‘checking’–with the low miles you reported, they may be the original tires, and could be close to failing due to rubber degradation.
I am all too familiar with those cracks on the sidewall. DID have a tire blow out on me on the highway! Good thing I know how to drive. Still…

Great advice here. Mileage has not been surpassed, but age has. Change due to age. Rubber deteriorates. ๐Ÿ™‚

Honda shoulda used a chain, like my truck…

My projects right now are two-fold: Honda Civic.. 1) Head Gasket 2) Timing Belt 3) Water Pump 4) (Fuel pump/issue) 5) Replace tire. (6: Air conditioning.) And: 2) 1993 S-10 Blazer – Fuel Pressure Regulator (I have the manifold off.) This one is being handled by long-time family mechanic: Rob at Ashley Auto.

Mom was relieved, she said “I’m happy that that was all that was wrong” and I said “I told you so!” ๐Ÿ™‚

Also sounded maybe like exhaust started rattling a little but surely he will see that while he is under there… My Uncle used to weld exhausts like weekly it seems.

Great car to learn stick on. When you learn how to bring the RPMs up just enough so it doesnt stall from a stop in 1st gear.. Then you got it. ๐Ÿ™‚

Glad I am not the only one that feels this way.

I have called the police on some drivers.. Usually the ones that issue verbal or gestural torts at me, and usually then after they did something unsafe.. towards me, and everyone else. (Zooming on my left at almost double speed limit and cutting me off, usually accompanied by a hard brake tap for a split second, horn honk and yelled out the window.. and no, not “kids.” This situation: IF no verbal taunt was made, I’d have let it go. But sometimes, the blood boils so much..)

^^ This always fails because I need to Google police phone numbers (I don’t use Police) .. and when I call it in.. I get a “yeah, yeah, we’ll send somebody out.” Which right then, I know.. They are long gone, and they will not be stopped. It’s like that with State Police, too.. They aren’t going ot magically post a trooper to overtake/intercept someone who is literally 30 miles away by the time they get to where I phoned it in. Sheesh…

I’d have just driven around you. brother (assuming there was no oncoming traffic or law enforcement around.) No point in getting mad or saying anything. Or honking. It kills me when people honk. I used to work in Fast Food, and.. When I tell you that there is something deeply wrong with people, it is born out by experience. lol

EDIT: Here in NJ, the person going “too slow” in front of me.. Would have then sped up and started a race at the exact moment I went to pass you… thus making me have to then complete that action with an equal and opposite reaction of completing the race, and probably cutting off the person to get in front when they felt the need to try to assert dominance by being a ****.

And the cops only come out a couple of days a month, also maybe on some nicer days when everyone is out, and so are they.. Otherwise, if you know where they usually are, you can either avoid those areas, or simply not speed in front of them.

I have to read this thread but let me chime in before I start my day and get ready, Driving is undisputably at an all-time low of enforcement, and an all-time high of lawlessness. People pass on double-yellow lines in Newark (three of them.. and that was with my off-duty Police friend in the passenger seat.) Big huge 53′ tractor-trailer did not want to yield to a Port Authority police SUV with its emergency lights on on a 2-lane road. People cut each other off with reckless abandon. And, yes.. CELL PHONE USE. I had to DRIVE AROUND someone that had her car stopped in front of me.. and what I mean by that is: The white SUV with a lady, calmly smoking a cigarette out the window.. was in front of me when the light turned green.. about 5 carlengths from the light. Every other car went.. I saw brake lights and saw the driver. Cigarette out the window.. on the phone, looked like texting. I evaluated the situation, went around, as it was evident she would rather sit there.. Tapped the horn as I passed to indicate that this was not safe behavior (tried to leave the whole “attitude” of someone that would do that out of it,) and .. she honked at ME! .. Well, I had to honk in response, but of course I kept on going. Just kinda stunned at how that all went down. Lady Gaga wanna-be person… smh…

I have also realized that “Every state has their own version of ‘We can’t drive.” Every single one. Again.. In NJ, We have people that will do 50MPH in a road that does about 70MPH int he right lane because they are TALKING ON THEIR PHONE. No police in sight. And I have noticed an ABSOLUTE LACK OF POLICE ON THE VAST MAJORITY OF ROADS. NONE. I saw some yesterday, but.. It’s the beginning of the month, and it’s Bayonne NJ. So, yeah, they are on the roads, lighting up some motorists.

But one thing I never do is ACCELERATE TO A RED LIGHT. That does not make sense. Sometimes, drivers act upset if I even coast. TO A RED LIGHT. Point of the fact: Drivers are absolute idiot morons that should not be behind the wheel. Pay them no mind.. And no, they won’t follow up on a road rage, as we need to understand the psychology of what driving a car does to a confrontation.
